Charleston Gray Watermelon

Watermelon, Charleston Gray

$3.85

Product Description: (Citrullus vulgaris) We’ve long been on the hunt for a watermelon that can thrive in a northern climate without sacrificing size or sweetness and found just that in the most unlikely of places. Despite originating in South Carolina, Charleston Gray outperformed every watermelon that we’ve ever grown here in Maine.

These fruit typically weigh in at about 25-40 lbs, sporting a beautifully frosty shell and an intensely sweet, fiber-free flesh that maintains its quality from the center to the rind. The only drawback worth noting are the seeds you’ll inevitably find yourself blowing into the bushes, but even those are few in number and large enough to remove with ease.

For an heirloom dating back to 1954, Charleston Gray still rivals any modern hybrid on the market. Open-pollinated. 25 seeds per packet.

Growing Information: Sow outdoors in late spring once the soil temperature reaches 70°F or start indoors 3 weeks before your expected last frost date. 2-3 cm seed depth. Full sun required. 87 days to maturity.

How To Save Watermelon Seeds

Remove the seeds from your ripest fruit, discarding any that are damaged or underdeveloped. Rinse thoroughly and spread out on an open surface to fully dry.
