Pennsylvania Dutch Butter Popcorn

Popping Corn, Pennsylvania Dutch Butter

$3.85

Product Description: (Zea mays) We’ve heard many rumors that the Pennsylvania Dutch have grown a popcorn variety since the 19th century which did not require any added butter. To say that we were skeptical would have been the understatement of the year. Yet, to much surprise, a quick test batch with nothing more than salt as an enhancer proved these rumors to be unquestionably correct.

As it turns out, popcorn can (and perhaps even should) be more than a mere vehicle for the seasonings of your choice. With the right variety, it can deliver flavor all its own. And better yet, the texture of Pennsylvania Dutch Butter popcorn was the crunchiest and most satisfying that we’ve ever tried.

Now don’t get us wrong — it would be borderline criminal to recommend that one refrain from tossing a healthy dose of salt, butter, or sugar into their bowl (at the very least) but with Pennsylvania Dutch Butter as your medium, the flavor will not be merely surface level.

This heritage popcorn variety is recorded as far back as 1885 but only became commercially available to home growers in 1988. Open-pollinated. 100 seeds per packet.

Growing Information: Direct seed 5 cm deep (2 inches) and 25 cm (10 inches) apart after all danger of frost has passed. Space rows about 1 meter (3 feet) apart. Plant in full sun and keep the plants well watered. 105 days to maturity.

How To Save Corn Seeds

Saving corn seeds is incredibly simple! Once the ears are dried thoroughly, peel back the papery husks and work the seeds loose with your thumb. Dry further if needed, then atore the seeds in a cool, dry location until you are ready to plant again.
